This year marks 30 years of BARCA Agroforestal’s work in sustainable forestry and community collaboration across Central America. What began in 1994 as the BIRD Eco plantations project in Parrita, Costa Rica—restoring degraded land with teak and native hardwoods, has grown into a regional leader recognized for responsible forestry and ecological resilience. Over the decades, BARCA has advanced genetic improvement programs, championed biodiversity-focused forestry, and strengthened its commitment to protecting natural forests, showing that ecological care and economic opportunity can grow side by side.
At the heart of this journey are the people who have shaped BARCA’s path from the beginning. Forestry Director Ricardo Luján, who joined in 1995, reflects on the company’s transformation from a reforestation initiative to an FSC-certified organization known for balancing profitability with stewardship. “BARCA’s work is a positive response to today’s climate challenges,” he shares. “We’ve balanced profitability with environmental stewardship, transforming rural areas into thriving ecosystems. It’s deeply fulfilling to see our projects foster biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods.”
Betsy Barcus, who has been part of the team since 2002, has guided BARCA through periods of change with a steady focus on people and community wellbeing. In 2024, she was appointed General Director, a recognition of her leadership and commitment to building an organization rooted in care for both land and livelihoods. Reflecting on this milestone, she notes, “BARCA is more than a forestry company—it’s a way of life. Fostering fair employment practices has been a defining aspect of our work. I’m proud of the resilience and adaptability that have brought us to where we are today.”
José Corrales, who began working with BARCA in 1997 after completing his forestry studies and master’s thesis on a BARCA project, was named Operations Director in 2024. He brings decades of field knowledge and a deep connection to the communities where BARCA works. “Our commitment to protecting natural forests and ensuring minimal environmental impact is embedded in everything we do,” José explains. “The trust communities place in us and the positive changes we’ve fostered make this journey especially rewarding. It’s been an honour to help build a company known for integrity and impact.”
Looking ahead, BARCA is expanding its efforts in agroforestry, silvopastoral systems, and genetic improvement of tree species to strengthen climate resilience and create lasting benefits for people and landscapes. Brinkman is proud to honour BARCA Agroforestal’s three decades of stewardship and to celebrate the thriving forests and communities that continue to grow from this shared vision.
