Cheakamus Community Forest Featured in The Narwhal

By

The Cheakamus Community Forest, a partnership between the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, and the Líl̓wat Nation, was profiled in Stephanie Ḵwẹtásel̓wet Wood’s feature for The Narwhal: “Meet the Cheakamus, the only community forest to develop carbon offsets in B.C.” It explores how the community has committed to more selective logging, expanded protection for streams and old-growths, and the creation of carbon offset credits that bring in ongoing revenue to support forest stewardship. These efforts are helping the forest store carbon, enhance biodiversity, and ensure long-term ecological resilience (The Narwhal).

The article also highlights the contribution of Brinkman As The Narwhal reported: Some critics are skeptical about assigning financial value to living beings, like trees. Others, such as the Brinkman Group and Ecotrust Canada, believe that carbon offsets are an ideal way to attach monetary value to living forests instead of from forests transformed to timber. Both organizations partnered with Cheakamus community forest to develop the offset project. Brinkman is honoured to have supported this collaborative path to forest renewal, shaped by Indigenous leadership and community values.

We continue to work alongside the Cheakamus Community Forest today, advancing regenerative solutions that strengthen ecosystems and support local communities.
